Planet Urban started off as a radio show on Melbourne based community radio stations SYN FM and North West FM. In 2004 May the founder of Planet Urban Radio decided to create a web site to compliment the radio shows. In three years the web site has had 3 face lifts and currently it’s in its 4th phase.
The Planet Urban name has been registered as a business name. The core activity is running PlanetUrban.com.au.
The site has grown from 50 unique visitors a month to 24,000 a month in three years. It currently holds over 300 downloadable audio tracks with 10+ exclusive tracks, over 160 of audio interviews, over 400 reviews, an immediate mailing list of over 6000 and a Myspace with 18,000 members, and a custom comic series.
Planet Urban currently has 4 full time employees and 12 part time employees all working voluntarily. The web site has been identified by the Australian Record Industry Association as a credible out let by inviting the site editor to be on the judging panel for urban releases for Australia. The site is also ranked 295,000 in the world on alexa ranking (source – alexa.com May 2008).
