Clinical Nurse Specialist - Respiratory
 

BJUSMBA/COL/041208/03 -- This private acute care facility is seeking a Specialist Nurse in the area of Respiratory Care to join their experienced team and bring enthusiasm and specialist knowledge. The Respiratory Nurse Specialist is responsible for establishing, delivering, promoting and developing a specialist Non-invasive Ventilation Nurse service for patients with respiratory conditions and sleep disorders. In order to establish this service, it will be essential to develop evidenced based policies, guidelines and procedures and a vision for the future pathway for the NIV service, in union with other key players in the provision of this service.


Responsibilities:
• Liaise closely and collaboratively with the Respiratory Consultants, Respiratory Laboratory Team, Nursing Team, and other multidisciplinary teams, to provide the highest possible standard of nursing care for respiratory patients.
• Act as a resource for colleagues throughout the Hospital by offering expert advice and support.
• Assist in discharge planning by ordering home ventilation and other respiratory equipment from suppliers.
• Educate patients and families about their respiratory illness, self-management and prevention, medications, use and care of equipment and smoking cessation.
• Liaise with community care areas and companies regarding the provision of home oxygen, nebulisers and non-invasive ventilation equipment.
• Foster good relationships with patients and their families, community healthcare professionals, GPs, Public Health Nurses and other relevant external bodies.
• Ensure that policies, protocols and guidelines for nurse service are developed, implemented, audited and reviewed as necessary.
• Work and expand clinical skills and practice to further develop the respiratory service, within the scope of nursing practice.
• Act as resource to Nursing staff/Respiratory Laboratory team.
• Audit the current nursing practice and implement and continuously evaluate improvements in the delivery of patient care.
• Identify service development needs annually and submit for service planning/ budgetary purposes on a planned basis.
• Be aware of research in clinical practice and at all times and endeavour to practice evidence based nursing care.
• Participate in approved data collection, clinical studies and trials as approved by the DoN and Consultants. Seek opportunities to initiate and undertake nursing research projects within the speciality.
• Publish work related to research and personal projects in collaboration with the Respiratory Consultants and the Director of Nursing
• Communicate, negotiate and represent the patient’s values with other health care professionals, using discretion and maintaining confidentiality.
• Help patients and families to obtain optimal treatment taking into account their special needs.
• Support patients and their families so that they have an understanding of the nature of the condition and of the implications for the patient and family.
• Be available and approachable for families when adjusting to changes in their condition and enable them to make informed decisions about their care.
• Give advice on the special needs of patients with respiratory disease and/or NIV, to other professionals and to the ERHA to assure the highest standard of appropriate care.
• Deal with psychological problems as they arise and know when to pass onto appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team i.e. social worker, GP and Respiratory Physicians.
• Take personal responsibility for their own professional growth and develop appropriate nursing action plans.
• Keep abreast of current research and developments in professional matters and in respiratory/NIV nursing. Attend relevant study days/conferences subject to prior approval and budgetary constraints in accordance with the Study Leave Policy.
• Organise Respiratory/NIV teaching programmes within the Hospital and act as a resource for specialist advice in Clinical Nursing practice.
• Review/develop educational materials ensuring evidence based content and appropriate standard for the target audience.
• Incorporate the health promotion principles into all aspects of nursing care.
• Possess expert knowledge in the area of NIV, sleep apnoea and respiratory nursing and be a resource for hospital and community based nursing, medical and paramedical colleagues.
• Be aware of Health and Safety issues to provide and maintain safe environment for self, colleagues and patients.
• Ensure all nursing procedures are carried out professionally and safely.
• Comply with the medications policy ensuring that regulations for safekeeping and recording of scheduled drugs are adhered to.
• Liaise and co-operate with Infection Control Nurse in the prevention of hospital acquired infection.
• Maintain vigilance of patients personal belongings.
• Report adverse occurrences as per hospital policy.
• Implement quality standards ensuring that a quality service is provided at all times.
• Participate in the formalisation and updating of hospital policies in line with current research.
